It is:
What music matters to this couple?
Their wedding song is an obvious starting point, if they had one. But don’t stop there.
What did they listen to when they first met? Was there a favorite singer or band? What music was popular during their early years together? Did they have a favorite place to dance? Is there a song associated with a memorable vacation, family tradition, or important moment?
Sometimes the most meaningful selection isn’t a famous love song at all. It is simply a song with a story attached to it.
Those are exactly the details worth sharing with a musician before the event.
Milestone Anniversaries Offer a Musical Timeline
A milestone anniversary gives us an interesting opportunity: the music can quietly reflect the years the couple has spent together.
Consider a 50th anniversary.
A couple celebrating 50 years together in 2026 was married in 1976. Their musical memories may reach back even further into the 1950s and 1960s, while their married life has continued through every decade since.
That gives us an enormous musical canvas.
Rather than playing only romantic standards, a program can include selections from different periods of their lives. Familiar melodies from their younger years can be combined with songs their children and grandchildren recognize.

This works particularly well at a multi-generational anniversary celebration because different songs connect with different guests.

People who haven’t heard a modern digital accordion are sometimes surprised by the range of music it can provide.
My Korg FISA Suprema can reproduce the character of many different traditional accordion styles, which is wonderful when a particular selection calls for an Italian, French, Alpine, or other distinctive accordion sound.
But I am not limited to accordion voices.

Anniversary celebrations often bring family history into the room.
If Italian, French, German, Irish, Latin, or another musical tradition is important to the couple or their family, including several appropriate selections can add another personal dimension to the event.
It doesn’t have to become the theme of the entire evening.
Sometimes just a few familiar melodies are enough to prompt stories, smiles, or even an impromptu sing-along.
Here again, information from the family is invaluable. Tell the musician what the couple grew up hearing and what traditions still matter to them.
Anniversary Parties on the Mendocino Coast
Mendocino County offers some remarkable settings for anniversary celebrations.
A couple might gather family at a private home overlooking the Pacific, host dinner at an inn or restaurant in Mendocino or Fort Bragg, celebrate at an Anderson Valley winery, or make the anniversary part of a weekend getaway on the Northern California coast.
The setting should influence the music.
An intimate dinner for 12 people calls for a very different approach from a 50th-anniversary reception with 75 guests. A winery celebration may benefit from sophisticated background music, while a family gathering at home can be more informal and interactive.
One advantage of a solo musician is flexibility.
The performance can be scaled to the room, and amplification can be kept appropriate to the number of guests. At an anniversary dinner, people should never have to compete with the music in order to talk.
Surprise Anniversary Parties Need a Little Extra Planning
If the event is a surprise, let the musician know.
Arrival timing becomes particularly important. You may want music playing before the couple enters, or you may prefer the performance to begin immediately after the surprise.
Special songs also need to remain secret.
Family members can often help identify meaningful music without involving the couple directly. Children, siblings, longtime friends, and members of the wedding party may remember details that make the musical choices much more personal.

Don’t assume every performer already has every song in their repertoire.

If a song has been meaningful to a couple for 40 or 50 years, it deserves more preparation than a last-minute request.

Recorded music can certainly provide pleasant background for an anniversary party.
Live music adds another dimension.
A musician can respond to the room, adjust the volume as conversations change, extend a selection when appropriate, alter the program based on guests’ reactions, and introduce a special song at exactly the right moment.
More importantly, live music creates a sense that the performance belongs to this particular celebration.
For an anniversary, that distinction matters.
The evening isn’t simply about hearing good music.
It is about celebrating two people and the life they have built together.
