What is a House Concert?
A house concert is exactly what it sounds like: a live musical performance held in someone’s private home (or occasionally a backyard), rather than a traditional venue like a bar, theater, or club.
The basics
- Setting: A living room, patio, or similar intimate space
- Audience: Usually 20–50 people (sometimes a bit more)
- Music style: Often acoustic, jazz, folk, classical, or singer-songwriter—but really anything that works in a smaller space
- Atmosphere: Quiet, attentive listening (not background noise like a bar)
How it works
- A host invites guests—sometimes via email or a private list
- Guests typically make a donation (often $15–$40) after the event and whatever they can afford and feel it is worth. Basucakkt a tip if they enjoted the event.
- Seating is informal—chairs, couches, even floor seating
- There’s often a break with snacks, wine, or desserts
Why people love them
-
For audiences:
You’re just a few feet from the performer—no stage barrier, no crowd noise -
For musicians:
Higher-quality listening, direct connection with guests, and often better net income than a bar gig
A few unwritten “rules”
- Listen respectfully (it’s not a cocktail party)
- Turn off phones
- Arrive on time—walking in mid-song is frowned upon
Why would you want to host one?
You create a musical event in a quiet setting with friends who are looking for the type of music you are having me provide.
What does it cost?
NOTHING!!! Not a Penny! (Unless you choose to provide some snacks or drinks for your guests). I do expect you to let your guests know that donations to the extent they feel the evening was worth it will be requested after the event - but just ike tips we will do that in a way that is in good taste and does not embarrass anyone who is not in a position to do so.
How do you set one up?
I will help you through the process - to include printed material on how to announce it (emails), how to creatre the atmosphere, everything. Basically, I have a vested interest because helping you make the event a succuess is paramount to your guests feeling it is worth a donation. Simply contact me via email at roy@royhelsingaccordionist.com or by going to the “Request a Quote” tab above and labeling the event as a house concert.
