Beautiful music isn’t about drawing attention to the performer. It’s about creating an atmosphere where people feel comfortable, connected, and free to enjoy one another.

That’s the philosophy that guides every performance I give.

Whether I’m playing for a celebration overlooking the Pacific Ocean, a winery gathering in Northern California, an anniversary celebration, a house concert, or a senior community, my goal is always the same: to help create an experience people will remember long after the last note has been played.

Music has an extraordinary ability to bring people together. It can calm a room, encourage conversation, spark memories, and celebrate life’s most important moments. I consider it a privilege to play a small part in those occasions.

A Lifetime in Music

My musical journey began at the age of five when I started taking piano lessons.

For the next eleven years, I studied piano seriously, performing classical works, sonatas, hymns, and religious music for church services and community events. Those years gave me a solid musical foundation and taught me the discipline of careful practice and thoughtful interpretation.

But if I’m honest, there was always another instrument that captured my imagination.

The accordion.

As a child, it was the instrument I truly wanted to learn. Whenever I heard one, I was fascinated by its sound, its expressiveness, and the joy it seemed to bring to audiences.

My parents, however, had a practical answer.

“Roy, you’ve already got a piano.”

So I kept playing the piano—but I never quite let go of the dream.

Finally, in my thirties, I decided it was time.

I began studying the accordion, and it quickly became much more than another instrument.

It became my passion.

Today, after years of study and performance, I still feel the same excitement every time I pick it up.

A Different Kind of Accordion

Many people have never heard a modern digital accordion before attending one of my performances.

They expect one familiar accordion sound.

Instead, they’re often surprised to hear rich orchestral strings, elegant piano, warm acoustic guitar, solo violin, majestic pipe organ, woodwinds, and, of course, the beautiful traditional accordion voices that have delighted audiences for generations.

That versatility allows me to tailor every performance to the occasion.

During a wedding ceremony, I may recreate the grandeur of a full pipe organ for the Bridal Chorus or Wedding March. Moments later, I can perform a romantic ballad with lush strings, an Italian classic with traditional accordion, or a contemporary love song with modern instrumentation.

For destination weddings, wineries, private parties, and outdoor venues where a piano or organ may not be available, that flexibility opens musical possibilities many people never imagined.

Experience Beyond Music

Although music has always been an important part of my life, it has shared that journey with several other rewarding careers.

I served for more than 21 years as an officer in the United States Army, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. During that time I had the privilege of leading outstanding soldiers and learning lessons about preparation, professionalism, responsibility, and service that continue to influence everything I do today.

After leaving the military, I founded The Helsing Group, a California community association management and consulting company. Over the next three decades, I helped build the organization into one of the state’s respected firms before selling it to the employees who helped make its success possible.

I’ve also enjoyed a lifelong passion for aviation, earning commercial, instrument, multi-engine, and flight instructor certificates and logging more than 5,000 hours in the air.

At first glance, military leadership, business ownership, aviation, and music may seem unrelated.

To me, they’ve always shared the same foundation:

Preparation.

Attention to detail.

Professionalism.

And a commitment to doing things well.

It’s Never About Me

One of the questions I’m occasionally asked is,

“What’s your favorite song to play?”

The answer changes.

Not because I can’t decide.

Because my favorite song is often the one that’s most meaningful to the audience.

Sometimes that’s Moon River.

Sometimes it’s Can’t Help Falling in Love.

Sometimes it’s an Italian melody that reminds someone of home.

Sometimes it’s a hymn that brings back treasured memories.

The greatest reward isn’t playing a difficult arrangement.

It’s watching someone smile when they recognize a melody they haven’t heard in years.

That’s why I believe music should serve the occasion rather than the performer.

Creating Memorable Experiences

Every event has its own personality.

Some call for elegant background music that encourages conversation.

Others deserve the grandeur of a wedding processional, the warmth of a winery gathering, or the intimacy of a house concert shared among friends.

Whatever the setting, I approach each performance with careful preparation, a broad repertoire, and genuine appreciation for the opportunity to contribute to someone’s special day.
